Think on these things…Part One

There are so many things we dwell on and think about today. The bad news that is constantly being put in front of us, our once united nation is being torn apart by hate and evil, things are going downhill fast.

But we can’t bury our head in the sand and we can’t ignore what’s going on. While it is disturbing and hurtful seeing what’s going on, we don’t have to dwell on it, God is in control of everything that is happening, so we need to rest in that fact and promise, and leave in it His all-powerful hand.

We need to dwell and meditate on more positive, lovely, and truthful things.

Philippians 4 gives us the perfect list of things to dwell on. For the next couple of Mondays, I will be focusing on this verse and each Whatever…

Philippians 4:8 says

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

The list of Whatever’s starts with Truth

What is truth? Truth is not a lie or a falsehood. It is a pure word or fact. Nowadays, you do not know what is true or false. You read one news article, and the next one completely contradicts it, and on it goes, the circle of falsehoods battling the truth.

There is just one place we can get the truth that never changes, and that’s God’s word. Satan would have us believe lies. But, God would have us counter the lies with the only thing that can counter them, the truth, and then think about these things.

We need the truth to fill our mind, fill it with the truth of scripture and the promises found in it. These truths are that God will never leave us nor forsake us – Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

God never changes – Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

And God will provide and care for us – Philippians 4:19

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Those are the truths that we should fill our minds with.

Next on this list of things to think on is Noble or Honorable

One of the many definitions of this word is: having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles and ideals.

A synonym of noble is ‘honorable’. Our thoughts should be worthy of honor and high moral principles.

2 Corinthians 8:21 says

…providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

Our thoughts and actions should be honorable, are they? God knows our thoughts, so we need to be aware of what enters our head.

Paul is telling us to think honorable thoughts that would be respectful of God, and others, even ourselves.

Also, things that give dignity to our life. When we become part of God’s family through salvation, we become nobles. An heir to Heaven

Titus 3:7 says

That having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Paul is telling us to act and think like a child of the One True King, like nobles.

So, our thoughts and actions must be noble and worthy of honor.

Just or Right is next

The word ‘just’ also means what is right or upright. To put it simply, we must love what is right, and doing what is right because is it right. And to do that one must think about what is right.

There is a lot of wrong going on in the world, things are not going right. But we don’t have to get caught up in it, we can dwell on the just and right. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33)

In my Sunday school class, I am going over the Armor of God, and last week we talked about the Breastplate of Righteousness, it protects us from the attacks of our enemy.

Righteousness means doing right in God’s sight. When we obey God’s commands in the Bible, we are acting righteously.

Once we know the truth (by studying God’s Word), we need to ask the Lord every day to help us to obey the truth and live and think righteously.

We need to focus on the right that which pleases God.

Next week will be part two!
