Learning to Dance in the Rain

We have all heard or seen the words

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…It’s about learning to dance in the rain.

I’ve never given that saying much thought, until today. As I write this, there is rain, thunder, and lightning going on. Wisconsin can have some pretty strong storms; thunder so loud it shakes the house.

But, as the rain comes down, it brings to mind that old, often overused, saying It’s about learning to dance in the rain. Instead of interpreting that literally, we can translate it to mean “learn to have fun when it’s raining” “look for something to be happy about in the rain.”

Now, before I go on, let me just say, I’ve “danced” in the rain, and it’s quite fun. But, during a thunderstorm, the last thing one should be doing is dancing a jig outside.

So, how does one “dance” in the rain? Well, the first step is…Give Praise.

God gave us the storm and rain, so, give praise in it. Thunderstorms can be annoying and overpowering sometimes, but God gives the storms for a reason; the rain to water the earth, and the thunder and lightning to remind us of God’s power.

Next is…Get Cozy.

I don’t care if it’s a thunderstorm in summer or fall, rainy days are cozy days. Light a candle, turn on your favorite tunes, grab a book or journal, and get cozy!

Or watch a movie.

Is there anything cozier than rain and a chick-flick, or favorite movie? Some of my favorite movies for such an occasion is:

You’ve Got Mail (Amazon Link)

Need I say more? A perfect movie for a cozy day.

Sleepless in Seattle (Amazon Link)

Again, same stars as You’ve Got Mail, and still just as good.

Ever After (Amazon Link)

This movie is so good! It’s the Cinderella story, told in a way you’ve never seen or heard. It’s a total favorite, I highly recommend it.

Fiddler on the Roof (Amazon Link)

Want to get lost in a movie full of history, music, and plot that pulls you in? This movie has it. While it is a long movie, it pulls you into a time so much more different than ours.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (Amazon Link)

Even now as I write this, my Mom and I are watching this movie. It is an old black and white, about a widow who rents a house at the seaside, only to discover it is haunted by the former owner, a sea captain. Romance and adventure are full in this old black and white.

Another way to “dance” out the storm is to get crafty.

I think a good portion of people have a Pinterest board full of DIY stuff we probably never will do. Try one out on a rainy day! Me, this my favorite art project, it’s easy and super fun.

It’s simply sharpie markers and rubbing alcohol.

Got a scrapbook that you keep putting off? Put together a couple of pages, have a new sketchbook? Try out some new drawings.

While it is not a craft, it is another fun way to pass a rainy day. Write some letters or emails.

We still have friends stuck at home; we often write them letters to let them know we are thinking of them and miss them. Write some emails or letters to someone you haven’t seen in a while.

So, pop in a favorite movie, get out the scrapbook or letters, and dance in the rain. And before you know it, the sun will come out.
